We specialise in various styles of gospel music ranging from the traditional gospel to contemporary style.
The Music: It’s purely gospel – all the different styles of gospel music. The choir members strongly believe that while performing this form of Christian music they are giving a service to the community by spreading the good news of Jesus and making others happy with their music. Hence the name “JOY Gospel Singers”.

JGS Style: Michelle Abela, the musical director prepares all the musical arrangements for the choir. She has a very particular style of music in mind (i.e. not a classical choir). She was first introduced to this style when she joined the Lucan Gospel Singers of Dublin Ireland while residing there before 2002.

With the help of her husband Carmel and the talented musicians and other choir members she has managed to bring this style of music to Malta . This required a certain set-up specifically to bring out a balanced sound mixture of the various choir elements namely the choir, instruments and soloists. The choir has invested in a dedicated sound amplification system and electronic instruments (Keyboard and drums) to suit the needs of the Maltase Churches.

We have held various concerts and performances and have also been asked to sing at Weddings and other such occasions.

We hold a monthly commitment to sing at Sunday Mass at St Lucia.

Music CDs: In 2007 the choir released its first Music Cd – “A Gospel Prayer” – a collection of Gospel Style songs with a prayerful theme. JGS has other videos and CDs with recordings of its first concert in 2003 and its Joint Concert with the Lucan Gospel Singers in February 2007.

A Gospel Prayer small

Our present membership includes : 44 singers, 2 musicians, the musical director and the technical support team.

Structure: The choir has a statute and committee. It is a non-profit-making organization made up of volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to producing this style of religious music, simply because they love it and want other people to love it too.

The choir is like a family and organizes social events and other activities for its members and their families.

Commitment: The choir requires maximum commitment from its members. JGS sings regularly at St Lucia Sunday Masses (where it is based and where the weekly rehearsals are held every Friday evening - thanks to the Parish Priest Fr Ivan Scicluna)

Concerts: JGS has over the years been invited to hold various concerts. Among the most prestigious events was the Concert in St Lucia in Christmas 2003 that was under the patronage of the President of Malta Prof Guido De Marco, and the Bible Society event at St John’s Cathedral in November 2005

Special events: A very sepcial event was the Joint concert in February 2007 with the sister group Lucan Gospel Singers from Dublin Ireland at St Lawrence Church Vittoriosa – a very unique experience for the singers and the audience.

Weddings : JGS often sing at weddings and parish events on request. All proceeds from these events go to the choir funds used to buy equipment and run the choir.

We are a non-profit making organisation. The expenses of running the group are covered by contributions from the members and any donations we receive from singing at weddings and concerts.
